Gilgit-Baltistan, Formerly


Known as the Northern Areas, is the norther most administrative territory of Pakistan. It borders Azad Kashmir to the South, the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa to the west, the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan to the north, the Xinjiang autonomous region of China to east.


Its is an autonomous self-governing region that was established as a single administrative unit in 1970, formed by the amalgamation of Gilgit Agency, the Baltistan region and the former princely states of Hunza and Nagar:


It covers an area of 72,971 km and is highky mountainous. It has an estimated population approaching 1,000,000. Its capital city is Gilgit ( population 216,760 ).




Gilgit-Baltistan is administratively divided into two division, which in turn. intonine districts, consisting of the four Baltistan districts of Skardu, Shigar, Kharmang and Ghanche and the five Gilgit districts are  Gilgit, Ghizer, Diamer: Astore and Hunza-Nagar: The principal administrative centers are tours of Gilgit and Skardu. 




It is home of  "fiveto eight thousands " famous mountains and more than fifty peaks above 7,000 metres. Gilgit and Skardu are the two main hubs for expedition to those mountains. This region is home of the world's highest mountain ranges. The main ranges are the Karakoram and the Western Himalayas. The Pamir mountains are to the north, and the Hindu KUSH LIES TO THE WEST.


The economy of the region is primarily based on traditional route of trade through the historic Silk rode. The rest of the economy is shouldered by mainly agriculture and tourism. Agricultural products are wheat, corn ( Maize ), barley and fruits. Tourism is very trekking and mountaineering and this industry growing in importance.




Polo is the favourite game of the people of Gilgit, Skardu, Ghanche, Chilas, Astore, Hunza Nagar and the surrounding area. Other games such as cricket, tuksori of Nagar gulli danda, kabbadi and volley ball are also played.  


 

The people of Gilgat-Baltistan wear "Shuqa", a long woolen gown with long sleeves. The women wear shalwar and kameez with dopattas. The men wear a hand made woolen cap called "Pakol". They consider a pride to wear it.


Skardu is the main town of Baltistan. It has very beutiful scenery surrounded by dry mountains. Skardu is connected with Islamabad by both air and also by road.


Baltistan has a group of cultures, languages and backgrounds. Shina is basic language of it. Other language include Brushaski, Wakhi, Khowar, Balti, Pasto, Urdu and English. The majorcrops of this region are potatoes, wheat,maize and barley.
